PLANS for a Bangladesh Community Centre to move into a former hairdressing salon in Melksham have won support.

The proposal to move into 9 King Street received the unanimous support of Melksham Town Council's planning committee on Monday evening.

The plans will now go to the district council for final approval.

Will the funding proposals be released or will it be confirmed that no public cash is going into this project, based on the fact it is for one ethnic group and goes against inclusive social cohesion which should be promoted, but seems only to apply to white middle class and working class people who would not be allowed to have a white community centre! If public money is being used councillors may face problems with re-election as the public are tired of paying for things they are unable to use / excluded from / discriminated against due to being part of the indigenous population.

This be third time this article has appeared. It gathers comments and then they gets wiped off. Must be important to someone. No me.

Me neither, Jarge.

Planning decisions are not taken on who makes the applicaion so an applicaion would be accepted if there are no planning objections.

This neither implies support for, nor objection to, the particular individual or group ownership. It is just the way it is reported that politicises it.

Who says anyone is going to be excluded? Discriminated against? A planning application was submitted and accepted by the Town council on merit. It is not part of the planning application process to discuss how a project is being funded.

Where's the so-called councillors on here now. Why don't they answer our questions. Are WE paying (council tax) for this centre???

I think you will find you can get a list of grant funded organisations from the town hall. That may tell you.

Sadly, the above posts may appear true and I fully understand the sentiments. However, I also understand that, there have to be actual planning objections to an application for councillors to object.

I see nothing in any of the articles to suggest that anyone other than the Bangladeshi Community Centre itself is going to fund this initiative. I have seen nothing to suggest that anyone will be excluded. I have however, read some narrow minded, unpleasant and ill-informed comments

Public Spirit, Wiltshire says...

The concerns are real and neither narrow minded nor unpleasant but maybe misdirected. I have seen no eveidence of funding from public sources in this instance but knowing the track record for public funding of ethnic minority facilities, which could be seen as discriminatory, valid concerns are aired in this thread with reasonable justification.

I'd love to hear more about this "misdirected" public funding of ethnic minority facilities in West Wiltshire.

I've not read anywhere that non Bangladeshis will be welcome either and not only that I doubt very much if its going o be self funded as our councils and governments normally throw money at this sort of thing.

Webbo - Where's your proof?

webbo, Devon says...

Read the papers and watch more news on the telly....all the proof you need is in there! if other melksham and other races were welcome why has it not been advertised as such instead of Melksham Bangladeshi centre instead of Melksham "community" center??

'Misdirected' referred to the comments, not the funding. I was simply pointing out that the source of public funding (if there is one) may or may not be local to West Wiltshire.

Webbo makes a good point that there often is funding for ethnic minority facilities which preclude others. If there were a 'Brits Only' centre, it would be considered discriminatory and receive no funding. One may ask why discrimination only works one way, after all we are the indiginous population, I think, and funding should give Brits priority!

careful or otherwise whiteraven will be pointing out that you think the brits are the most important people in Britain and according to him/her your not supposed to say things like that.....but WELL SAID!!! we may be the indiginous population but we are certainly the minority now.

Interesting - so what's your view on ex-pat British clubs in Spain and France?

Whiteraven, Wiltshire says...

Actually if any nationality or religion - English, Welsh, Irish, African, Caribbean, Asian,Indian or Catholic, Jewish, Hindu - or any other wanted to set up a community centre to celebrate their culture, meet with like minded people, I would be very supportive - as long as they don't exclude others from joining, visiting, sharing.

Whiteraven, Wiltshire says...

I notice that nobody has yet given any firm evidence that this Bangladeshi Community Centre in Melksham is either going to exclude anyone or is going to receive any public funding. I hope they achieve their goal of providing a community centre and that it is successful.

I am agog with anticipation. Perhaps all ravens will congregate therein! As I said on the funding: no proof either way so we're left guessing.

No, as it happens. Are you a Marxist posing as a LibDem?

'Public' spirit applies to the majority of the British people not just ethnic or any other minorities.

Public Spirit, Wiltshire says...
4:15pm Sat 22 Mar 08

If you read my postings, Jethro, you will see that I have taken a balanced view on funding, making no accusations or claims on funding for this particular poject. I simply stated that we don't know about the funding but there are precedents for Webbos suspicions. That hardly places me as a member of the BNP or any other political party.

Whiteraven, Wiltshire says...

Public Spirit: where in any of my postings have I said that I am a "whiteraven who doesn't care" about how public money is spent? Until that mean comment you had tried to keep a balanced view on the funding of this project. I have just said I have seen no evidence that this project is receiving any. Well said Nicole there are too many mean spirited people around. A little more generosity of spirit would be lovely.
