THE M4 will close overnight tonight between Chippenham and Swindon to allow work to be done on overhead electricity cables.
The motorway will close between Junctions 16 and 17 from 10pm tonight until 5.30am on Saturday.
Highways Agency project manager Dave Frampton said: "We are closing the M4 in the interests of road safety at the request of Scottish and Southern Energy to allow them to replace overhead electricity cables.
"The work has been scheduled to be carried out while traffic is light, but will inevitably lead to longer journeys for overnight traffic and drivers are advised to allow longer for journeys."
During the closure eastbound heavy goods vehicles will be diverted to leave the motorway at Junction 17 and to travel south on the A350.
Vehicles will then take the A4 east and then onto the A3102 at Calne to travel north and rejoin the M4 via the eastbound entry slip road at Junction 16.
Non-HGV eastbound traffic will be diverted to leave the motorway at Junction 17 to travel north on the A429.
At Malmesbury traffic will join the B4042 east and join the A3102 before rejoining the M4 via the eastbound entry slip road at Junction 16.
Heavy goods vehicles travelling west will be diverted to leave the motorway at Junction 16 and take the A3102 south towards Calne to join the A4 west.
At Chippenham, traffic will take the A350 north and rejoin the M4 via the westbound entry slip road at Junction 17.
Non-HGV westbound traffic will be diverted to leave the motorway at Junction 16 onto the A3102 west and join the B4042.
At Malmesbury, traffic will turn left onto the A429 south and rejoin the M4 via the westbound entry slip road at Junction 17.
All diversions routes will be clearly signed.
