Badger sett scare for Scooby

8:28am Friday 4th April 2008

A PET dog from Westbury got itself stuck down a badger sett for eight hours.

Scooby, a four-year-old Patterdale Terrier was out on an Easter egg hunt with his owner Jenny Stallard, 30, from Matravers Close, Westbury, and her family on Easter Monday.

They were walking by the BMX track in Westbury woods near Wellhead Lane when Scooby went down a badger sett and failed to resurface.

Mrs Stallard said: "We started to look down the holes and called his name but we couldn't see him. We called the fire service and my husband went to a house on Wellhead lane to ask for help.

"We also phoned the RSPCA to see if we could disturb the badger sett but they said it would take 36 hours to get a license to disturb the set.

"The woman at the RSPCA also said that if that if a badger had seen Scooby it would have killed him to protect its cubs." The family then called Westbury lost pet patrol aka Tony Hall who tried to find Scooby by using his sound equipment, but to no avail.

By 9pm Mrs Stallard's husband Barry Stallard and his brother Darryl Stallard had set up camp in the woods to find Scooby along with Mr Hall.

Mrs Stallard said: "Then around 9.45pm they heard scrabbling and it was getting louder and louder. Barry was looking down one of the holes and Scooby just shot out.

"Scooby ate two days worth of food in that night. He was physically shaking.

"He's had lots of cuddles and fuss since he's been back he's been spoilt rotten. He's had lots of dog food and new toys as well.

"I want to say a great big thank you to the fire and rescue service and the couple from Wellhead Lane and Tony from the pet patrol."

Scooby is, quite rightly, getting alot of extra love and cuddles now!!!! And he got alot before the event. What the article fails to mention is just how great the PET PATROL SERVICE was. How informative, friendly and supportive as well as getting stuck in and helping comb the woods looking for Scooby. Well done Tony.

The woods are called "Wellhead Woods", Westbury.

The spring for Wellhead Stream is in these woods, just by the Wellhead Pumping Station.

The term "Westbury Woods" is one that has cropped up since kids from all over the town started using the woods for skate-boarding and BMX in the woods about 10 years or more ago.

I grew up in Wellhead Lane.

The woods are "next" to and "at the end of" Wellhead Lane.

The article says "near to". The lane peters out now into a footpath onto Wellhead Drove which runs along the southern side of the woods.

The path used to be wide-enough for a car in the late 70s and early 80s and then bollards were erected to stop cars and the lane got gradually narrower.

My point is that the woods are unmistakeably "Wellhead Woods".

The term "Westbury woods" could mean any woods in the parish of Westbury. There are several, not least being the one on the Grassy Slope and Chalky Walk escarpment across the other side of Wellhead Valley from Wellhead Woods.

There is also Old Dilton Woods (actually in Westbury parish).

There are more woods along the main entrance lane up the the White Horse from Newtown.

I don't care what you think, not least because what you say is usually total nonsense.

Let's look at the rubbish you've said this time:

1. Gratuitous name-calling.
2. I think many people do like to know the correct name for places.
3. I don't pick at every quote - far from it. This is gross exageration.
4. The slope up the escarpment is Grassy Slope. Wellhead Woods (aka "Westbury Woods by those who don't know the correct name) is not on the escarpment. If you call these woods "grassy Slope" you have a very muddled way of naming things.
5. If you have really lived in Westbury long enough to grow up, its about time you actually knew the difference between the woods and Grassy Slope.

Having said that, of course you are perfectly entitled to call it what you like. You can be as silly as you want and I don't care.

I have no idea what his doing in a Badger's hole. Perhaps his trying to make little badgers. Who are we to question his sexual orientation.
