A MOTORIST died last night after a crash on the A361 near Seend.

The driver of a silver Peugoet was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision shortly before 6.30pm on Sunday.

His car was in collision with a silver Punto which was travelling in the opposite direction on Caen Hill towards Devizes.

The occupants of the Punto were airlifted to hospital but their injuries are not thought to be serious.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the silver Peugeot and a green Peugeot who were travelling down Caen Hill shortly before the tragedy.

Anyone with information should call Pc Mark Burnett at Chippenham Police Station on 0845 4087000.

The short section of road between Seend fork and the start of Caen Hill dual carriageway has a disproportionately high number of fatal accidents. This was where the 'not speeding' Aston Martin driver was killed recently and there are several more that I can remember. Maybe the authorities need to launch an investigation to see what road improvements can be made, as they are now doing with the A36 at Black Dog Hill. We will await the cause of this crash but looking at the front-end damage to the Pug some considerable closing-speed was involved in this head-on collision. Most accidents are of course caused by driver error.

I find it hard to picture the place. The report says "near Seend" but "on Caen Hill". I am further confused by the fact that the investigating officer is in Chippenham. Are there no more Police in Devizes?

At the bottom of caen hill are traffic lights that is seend fork, and chippenham police are dealing with it because they have a traffic department and that area is under their territory so to speak.
but still a awfull loss my deepest sympathies are with the family

Tragic though this is, may I hazard a guess that at least one car was driven by an under 25 year old; most young drivers always tend to be in such a terrible hurry to get some where for some reason.

Probably you should add the word "male"

In another thread Yetijoe suggested £1000 on the spot fines for speeding - this awful incident makes the argument even stronger

How do you suggest that the driver pays?

In this particular case the unfortunate driver paid the highest possible price; but as a deterrent, a very high fine should make most speeding drivers think twice

Sadly 'Disillusioned' (as modified by 'Walter') has been proved correct.

Yes, especially as the Gazette and Herald version mentions that he was "being followed" by a friend in another Peugeot. I make no accusations, let's wait for the coroner's report.

Yetijoe can afford it if he gets caught, but how would poor Sally manage? Another DHS loan?
