BRIGADIER Robert Hall has today been elected as the new chairman of Wiltshire County Council at a meeting of the full council.

He takes over the role from Judy Seager who steps down after her year in office.

Robert Hall was educated at Repton School, the RMA Sandhurst and Magdalene College, Cambridge, where he obtained a masters degree in International Relations.

He served in the Army for 36 years in the Royal Artillery. He commanded 25 Field Regiment in Paderborn, Germany and Belfast.

In his last appointment, as Brigadier Arms Control, he led the first British Arms Control Inspection under the Conventional Arms Control Treaty of, the then, USSR.

Since leaving the Army he has worked as a principal in the Civil Service at Upavon handling liaison with our Allies, as President of Wiltshire St John Ambulance for six years, and as a trustee of two service charities based in Wiltshire.

He is married to Lorna and has two children, two step-children and two grandsons.

He has been a county councillor for the Bedwyn and Collingbourne Division since 2005.

Roy While takes over as vice-chairman. He has been a county councillor since 2005 and currently represents the Melksham without Division.

Maybe some discipline will be brought to bear now....

There'll certainly be one more tweed jacket gracing County Hall.

The chairman of the council has no disciplinary powers, except in the conduct of full council meetings, which only occur a few times a year.

The chairman of the council is essentially a figurehead.

The real power is in the hands of the Leader, Cllr Jane Scott, not least because she appoints her cabinet members and will, no doubt, have had a lot to say about would be appropriate as the next Chairman of the Council.

I've met Robert (before he was elected), who is certainly very sound indeed - as one would expect any modern British Army Brigadier to be.
