Law firm backs parking campaign

A TROWBRIDGE law firm has joined the campaign to give workers of west Wiltshire towns a better parking deal.

Solicitors Sylvester Mackett in Castle Street, Trowbridge, has leant its support to The Price Ain't Right campaign launched by the Wiltshire Times last week.

Backed by the Trowbridge Chamber of Commerce we are campaigning to get affordable parking for the thousands of people who work in Trowbridge and the other four towns each and every day.

Jonathan Frayling, of Sylvester Mackett is backing the campaign, which he believes will help many people.

He said: "We have 40 staff here at the firm, most of which park in the town when they come to work.

"Currently they use the free multi-storey car park but when that closes for refurbishment and parking control is passed over to West Wiltshire District Council there will be a severe shortage of places to park and if you do manage to get a space it will be expensive.

"If you have to find up to £60 a month to pay for parking just so that you can get to work then the vital workers who keep Trowbridge going will be hit and the town will suffer."

The campaign is pushing for affordable annual permits for employees and the adequate provision of spaces.

Mr Frayling said: "There is no doubt this will put a strain on the workers of Trowbridge and the demographic that will be most severely hit will be the low earners.

"Salaries are set in this town and are not going to go up and this is going to hit people straight in the wallet. We are not asking for anything unrealistic, just affordable permits and spaces to use them in.

"If you put a strain on the finances of the very people you depend upon to keep the town going then Trowbridge will suffer."

The Wessex Association of Chambers of Commerce is conducting separate discussions with West Wiltshire District Council and is not part of the campaign drive.

Residents in Bradford on Avon are also concerned.

Barbara Humble, of Woolley Street, said: "Those who will suffer most will be the residents in the five town centres who have no off-street parking.

"Although, some people will be able to pay for space in nearby car parks, in many areas this facility is just not available."

You can sign our online petition calling for a fairer deal on parking prices for workers in west Wiltshire by visiting www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk Petitions have also been distributed throughout Trowbridge.

So, Tesco have free parking - customers of all the other businesses in town have the millstone of parking charges to step over before they get a customer.

I'd feel aggrieved if I paid business rates and saw my staff and customers being ransomed (on pain of imprisonment)to visit my premises.

The County Town of Wiltshire is an ugly, gap toothed, old tart trying to extort money from folk just trying to go about their daily business.

Its been like that in London for a long time. So why can't Wiltshire face up to

Because we are nothing like that fractured community called London.
We think of ourselves as one community and speak with one voice.
This one voice is saying no.

London cannot say no unless its in 120+ languages and if they are kept 'apart' like they are, you'll never have one voice.
That way everything they want to do taxwise is done.

Anyway..
How can you compare us to that spawling monstrosity which does nothing except cater to everything any minority wants at the rest of the countries expense.

I find the direction of London foul.
Its a selfish introvert place that happily soaks up all of our taxes without consideration.

No, No, No to parking charges!
Not niet, non, Ne, Nona, Nie etc etc

Like what in London?

At least they've got some public transport - and in general - it's usable.

And London is a success and a pleasant place to live?

Yes London is a nice pleasant place to live. Not like most of the carrot crushers round here think and cost of thing in London are no more than anywhere else’s and it a pity more people don’t speak other languages in this back would county. As for the parking in Wiltshire
Get over it

I think there is an east solution to the parking issue. More people should car share, cycle or dare I say it walk...

To many people rely on their cars to make short journeys to work. Not only would they not need to park if they didn't drive, they would also do a little to preserve the world we live in!

In a nut shell, go and find out some facts about reproduction and travel - London is an expensive dump - Trowbridge is a cheap dump. You seem to like being poked time and time again for tax without any service and nil accountability .

Until public transport comes up to scratch - which it certainly isn't at present - most people will have to rely on their fossil fuelled cars.

Being predated by municipal bandits who spend like there's an endless pot of other peoples money to loot doesn't sit well with most people - charging locals for parking they've already paid for in tax is taking the p i s s.

You say check out prices elsewhere - I do mate ... ~ 6 months a year around the world and we're being s c r e w e d mightily in this country. Spain and France have local taxes that are a fraction of the UK and they have better services.

And.. before anybody suggests it - yes - I'm leaving.....

We pay far too much council tax for silly things that no one wants like being educated in the benefits of reusable nappies and what we should eat. Free parking for all would be a much better use of the money collected.

London is a dump where one cannot even drive in without being fleeced by Red Ken's so called congestion charge and I doubt Batty Boris will be much better!

Poo Plant Earth...more like Poo Planet Zarg! What language do they speak on Zarg, Poo?

People should live and drive as they like, trowbo. If you really believe all that government 'save the earth' propaganda, you're at liberty to walk or cycle everywhere, build your own windmill, keep your mud hut warm with solar power in winter, grow your own veg, dress in sack cloth and be a hippy or emulate the third world population to your heart's content.

Maybe most of the rest of us want to keep our modern way of life and we do not need you, local or national government to tell us how to live!

Zarg is what carrot crushers speak unintelligible or meaningless talk or writing; gibberish. Like the Wiltshire times. The price Ain't right.SOULD BE THE PRICES NOT RIGHT. Or is that so the carrot crushers can under stand it.

So short sighted... lets hope you're right and it is only propaganda. I take it your sufficiently old that you'll be dead before it matters anyway.

Trowbo. Short-sighted is not the right term here. Looking at the big picture is though. A number of people take government propaganda at face value. Others revel in it because it is what their need for self-loathing wants to hear.

It is well worth any reasonable person investigating all this global warming in depth before committing everyone to a life of austerity. The flaws in the arguments are there to see if you just take a look.

Age is not a factor for most of us who have children. The question is: do you want to condemn your offspring to a backward economy and retrograde primitive "green" lifelstyle without knowing if it is valid scientific fact or just contrived tax-hiking politics leading the way?

Science questions and seeks the truth, political convenience fixes the answer then gets pseudo-science to support its prejudgement! That may be the first thing to ask: Why do many governments want the debate on global warming closed? You may well find it is out of fear of science having already discovered that carbon dioxide is not the cause and getting publicity which is happening.

trowbo, Trowbridge says...

Public Spirit. All that you say may (is) true, however, surely anyone can see that what mankind is doing to the planet isn't going to help it in the long run. Whether it is the carbon dioxide levels, other green house gases etc, we are still raping the planet, making changes that can't be reversed.

I don't belief resorting to a medival society is the answer, just that each and every person does their little bit to reduce the damage that is being done. If each person could cut out a short journey in their car, turn off lights not being used or recycle their plastic it will help to keep the planet going.
