THERE have been major disruptions on rail services between Westbury and Castle Cary after 200 meters of cable were severed.

Network Rail and British Transport Police (BTP) received a report of signal failure in the Frome area at 11.55pm yesterday.

After investigation BTP found a large amount of cable, which power the track, had been severed.

BTP have arrested one man, who is believed to be in his 20s, on suspicion of theft of cable.

A BTP spokesperson said: "This is an extremely dangerous crime which is costly to the rail industry and causes hours of delays to the thousands of passengers who rely on the rail network. The disruption that is caused really is an attack on the community."

A spokesperson for Network Rail said: "This incident is appalling because it creates a huge amount of inconvenience to passengers and we are trying to provide a safe rail service.

"We will be working very closely with British Transport Police to stamp out this kind of vandalism in the future."

First Great Western said that trains are now operating on the track, but at very slow speeds.

There is a replacement bus service to Weymouth and there will be addition stops between Paddington and the Berkshire and Hampshire line.

Passengers are advised to contact National Rail Enquires on 08457 48 49 50 before they travel.

If you have any information on this incident please call BTP on 0800 40 50 40.

Wowee!! - they electrified the London - Penzance line.

err... nope - clueless press releases or clueless reporters making stuff up that they don't know SFA about.

And no - I'm not a train spotter. They'll be telling us airplanes fly cos they're lighter than air next = b l o o d y clueless.

And - if said scrote was tinkering with aeroplanes he'd get porridge - for sure - and if he wore Arab headgear they'd throw away the key.

A prophesy - he walks "insufficient evidence" which is a shame.

I'd happily send him on a plane journey to a foreign country where the "local investigators" would convince him to rat on his pals.

When they find out there's £100 of bronze bearing material on each railway wheel (OK possibly wildly inaccurate) expect derailments and fires etc. etc. this sort of Nigerian infrastructure pillaging should be stamped on big time.

Look Wurzel me old mate, might not be his fault - it's possible that his Teddy were snatched away when he were a kid, or his Mum couldn't afford to buy him the new Man United strip.
