A PUB near Bradford on Avon has been voted the best place to eat along the Bristol to Weymouth railway line in a poll of railway enthusiasts.

The Inn at Freshford topped the list on the Foody Trail, which is published by the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership.

This selection of 11 great places to eat from Weymouth to Bristol was put together by a group of the line's volunteer supporters, who invited rail customers to send in their own restaurant reviews.

The Inn at Freshford won a subsequent vote as the top choice for both the quality of its food and for excellent service.

A celebration was held at the pub with Foody Trail originator and editor, Peter Argent, presenting a Foody Trail 2008 Winner's plaque to head chef Kevin King and staff members Ron and Hilary.

Attending the event were a large contingent of Heart of Wessex Community Rail volunteer supporters from Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire destinations along the line, including the chairman and secretary of the West Wilts Rail Users Group.

Landlord Ken Roberts said: "We are very keen supporters of our treasured local railway line, and are always delighted to be included in the Heart of Wessex Rail Partnership's promotions, which encourage people to leave their cars behind for a more relaxing and environmentally friendly day out.

"We have met some super new customers from all over the country and even abroad as a result of their promotions, and are very proud to have won this award."

Mr Argent said: "The competition was very intense, as all of our selections proved highly popular with participants.

"However Kevin's culinary skills plus Ken, Ron, Hilary and the charming team of staff gave the Inn that special edge it needed to win."
