SCHOOLCHILDREN from Trowbridge were lucky enough to meet two Olympians when a gymnast and an athlete visited them at school.

Todd Bennett, a silver medallist in the 400m relay at the 1984 Olympics and Olympic gymnast Ryan Bradley were invited to The Mead Community Primary School, in Hackett Place, Hilperton, on June 18.

PE teacher Ash Laukman co-ordinated the event, which was set in motion by the schools PTA, the Friends of The Mead.

The Superstars event to inspire children to try out different sports saw the Olympians address the morning assembly and then do exercises with the children.

Mr Laukman said: "They set up the hall and got some exercises going.

"Every single pupil in our school had a chance to do sit ups, star jumps and leg thrusts.

"The pupils really enjoyed it and they got their autograph books signed.

"Afterwards Ryan did a floor display which included handstands and back flips.

"I would like to think it would inspire kids to take up gymnastics.

"My belief is kids do not know what is their sport until they try it. There are lots of opportunities out there to become quality sportsmen and women."
