Parents warned over holidays

NEW guidelines on truancy will mean parents could be fined if they take children on holiday in term time.

Wiltshire County Council has been issuing truancy penalty notices since May 2006 but until now holidays taken in term time have not been considered as unauthorised absence. This is no longer the case.

Under the council's truancy code of conduct if a student has five days of unauthorised absence in six months the parents will be hit with a penalty of £50, which has to be paid within 28 days.

If the fine is not paid within this period the figure will rise to £100. If after 42 days the penalty has not been paid, legal proceedings will be taken against the parents through the magistrates' court.

Wiltshire County Council spokesman Matthew Woolford said: "Our aim is to ensure that pupil absence from school is kept to a minimum and that parents understand that everyday missed matters.

"It also helps to give parents piece of mind, knowing where their children are and that they are safe.

"We want each pupil to achieve to their full potential and the best chance they have of doing this is by attending regularly at school."

He added: "We are providing advice to schools, which mirrors Government guidance that they can only agree to absence for a family holiday in term time if they believe there are special circumstances which warrant it.

"Similarly, schools can only agree to absence of more than 10 school days in a school year if they believe there are exceptional circumstances.

"If parents do not apply for the leave of absence in advance of taking it, or the school does not agree the leave of absence or the child is kept away from school for longer than was agreed, the pupil must be recorded as having unauthorised absence."

Schools have been advised that each holiday absence should be considered individually taking into account the potential negative impact the absence could have on a child's academic progress.

The new guidelines will come into force from September.

Naughty naughty, don't you dare try to get cheaper holidays.

I do not see any issues with taking your child out of school during term time as long as the child can catch up with anything they miss.
Which may not be much judging on what's being churned out year after year at present.

Another tax?

Soon they will charge you to do this and it will be OK.... hold on....that's what they are doing....

do the teachers get the same fine?

Be good if they did - then maybe we could take advantage of time off during term time too!

How often is a childs education stopped or 'altered', ad hoc, for 'teacher training' or teacher absense?

One rule for some another for others it seems.

However, paying the £50.00 fine is still cheaper than peak holiday booking prices.

Who actually thinks this was anything but a tax?
Not me.

No! It's purely about targets! It's easier to fine parents for holiday absence than to chase and deal with 'real' truants.

Its a good idea!!! why should the tax payer pay for schooling when kids are not attending.
If parents dont send their kids to school they should pay the cost of that days eduction back.
Kids should be in school when its term time.
There are plenty of holidays through out the year.

You need to go further back in this argument. Why do all schools have the same long summer holiday? Because kids used to have to help with the harvest. There is no reason why the holiday can't be "staggered", as it is for example in France and Germany, where the different areas have different dates. This way they are not all on holiday at once. Or there could be four holidays of three weeks each, which is no more than they get now with the holidays and half-terms.

I have to say i agree it is another tax, and it is true all holidays taken in term time are much more expensive,

not to mention busy, the last two summer holidays and to date this one has been very wet i know the weather cant be gaurenteed but i alway take my holiday in june and the majority of the week has been very good. i think the goverment has a weak argument to say that it ensures parents know that their children are in school we are talking about a weeks holiday maybe two. i wont be told what to do by big brother

Parents will still take their kids off on holiday when they can afford to do so. All that will happen is that the kids will suddenly be stricken by a week-long illness. Then the next week the kids will go back to school with a healthy glow about them!

Its yet another unreasonable policy by the Government that results in more fines/taxation.
