A FIREWORK rocket will be launched to mark the start of the Chippenham Half Marathon on Sunday.

The race, which is organised by the Chippenham Harriers will mark their 25th anniversary and kicks off from outside the Chippenham Sports Club in Bristol Road at 9.30am.

The route will rake runners through the centre of Chippenham and around scenic country lanes visiting local villages and hamlets along the way. The race will be marshalled by police and volunteers and people have been asked to be aware of road safety around Malmesbury Road, which will be the only main road to remain open during the race.

Organiser and Chippenham Sports Club steward Andy Thatcher said it will be a great day for all the family. He said: "There will be plenty of sponsor and charity stalls on the day for people to look at and plenty of refreshments from a barbecue to curries and all day Sunday lunches."

I was very pleased to hear that Chippenham Harriers have resurrected this great half marathon. I used to run this years ago and always enjoyed it, the course is flat and fast. I hope they keep it going!!

I admire anyone who can stick it out for that distance. I always tend to remember that Pheidippides, who ran the original "Marathon" to bring news of a Greek victory to Athens, collapsed and dies.
