EMERGENCY crews were called to a house in Trowbridge on Saturday after a fire broke out in a bedroom.

At 1pm, Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to the house in Avenue Road, which was unoccupied at the time, after the owner spotted smoke coming from the first floor while he was in the back garden.

The fire was located on the first floor in a bedroom and involved clothes and shoes.

There was extensive heat and smoke damage to the bedroom and smoke damage to the rest of the first floor and roof space.

Firefighters used a hose reel and four breathing apparatus to extinguish the flames, a mechanical ventilation fan to clear the smoke and thermal imaging camera to check for fire spread.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but it is believed to have been an electrical fault.

The service has warned people to make sure they have a working smoke alarm fitted.

'An electrical fault' inside clothes and shoes? The mind boggles as to what the owner was up to.
