New year vote on Asda plans

SUPERMARKET chain ASDA has called on West Wiltshire District Council to make a decision soon on their plans for a £25 million store in Melksham.

A planning application for the store, on the Countrywide Farmers site off the A350, was submitted in December 2007 and was supported by Melksham Town Council. But Wiltshire County Council raised objections on highways issues, including the fact that the store would need access routes onto the busy A350.

West Wiltshire District Council, who has the final say on the plans, requested further information about the application in relation to the capacity of the store, highways and linkage to the town.

If plans are approved the 28,500 sq ft store would create 300 jobs for local people.

Chris Marlow, ASDA’s property communications manager said: “With the economy going into recession, local decisions on developments that create jobs and provide access to affordable goods and services cannot be delayed.

“We’ve had a number of discussions at district and county council levels to ensure that the proposals meet the needs of the community, and also submitted supporting documents that demonstrate the need to regenerate this site as well as the compliance with planning policy.”

He said the company had been receiving weekly inquiries from local people asking when the store would open.

A spokesman for West Wiltshire District Council said the application was highly complex and had required a great deal of work and consultation.

He said: “In our opinion the planning application submitted by ASDA features a number of significant and fundamental weaknesses.

“There are concerns over the impact it would have on the viability of Melksham town centre.

“It is poorly suited for public transport and pedestrian use as the only real practical access is by car. In addition there are highway concerns that need to be addressed.

“It is likely that the application will go to the planning committee on January 8 and will be recommended for refusal. The final decision will rest with the planning committee.”

im sure it will have no impact on melksham town trading, i, as do many others already travel out of town to do my weekly shop at asda in trowbridge, it may also bring trade in from chippenham as they dont have an asda the planning people need to put some serious thought into this as melksham is fast becoming another westbury

It is not that "It is poorly suited for public transport" - it is that public transport is poorly suited to get there! Maybe if it is built, ASDA could do as many supermarkets do elsewhere - run a bus service to the store.

Get on and let them build it Melksham needs it and it needs it now, in times like these if someone wants to bulid and create new jobs they should not be held back. There is nothing in melksham town center for it to impact on a peacocks a soon to be defunct woolies takeaways charity shops and estate agents, not exactly retail heaven is it. We had the same problem back when they wanted to build that shopping village behind mcdonalds.

Countrywide has been serving Melksham in this spot for years, it hasn't caused problems and they get a lot of custom. Why, then should it be a problem to have Asda their??? Wiltshire District Council do not listen to the people of the town, they listen to a few people who worry about how it will affect the business' in town. Pray , tell me what business'. Sainsbury's, Lidl's and Somerfield will do well with the competition, as all of them compete against each other in other town's, and it doesn't cause those town's problems. Come on wake up to the real world, this is a good chance to bring jobs, that will be much needed when woolworths shuts, but also it will bring a store that the majority of Melksham peple want. Why does Melksham lose out to everything? Melksham already has a reputation for being a Town that hasn't got much to offer, so many people jus pass through it.

The councillors in Trowbridge will not want this to go through as they will be worried it will affect the Trowbridge trade. Melksham will always be the poor neighbour and, as rightly pointed out, if and when we lose Woolworths, there will be NO good shops in Melksham at all. All the time we see new housing developments being built all around Melksham and we have no decent shops to accommodate them. Its a disgrace! Our town councillors should be doing everything they possibly can to get this development through, or this town will rot around them!

a) the Countrywide place is off a B road, not a dual carriageway!

b) What are you on about?

I never understand why there is so much debate on this Asda store, Sainsburys is possibly placed in one of the worst spots in the town, the access to the store from that roundabout was poorly planned at best, the site must be liable to flooding surely? With the petrol station being so close to the river this is obviously a good thing! Yes we all know that the mill road floods, address it in a sensible way and let this store happen. The access arguement is a non event, this is one of the busiest roads carving through Wilts its dual carriageway and can cope if its planned correctly.

So everyone is supposed to drive there are they?
What about people who want to walk from town?
It's a long way and they have to cross the A350.
You are correct, the A350 is 'one of the busiest roads carving through Wiltshire', that is why there shouldn't be another access off it.

It is good to see someone wanting to invest in Melksham - lets hope District Councillors overturn the Officer's wishes.

Trowbridge bloke, look at EVERY development in Chippenham and Trowbridge and your telling me people walk to them? Thats rubbish and you know it, this just needs to addressed and improved not thrown out, Sainsburys, Morrisons, B and Q, Wickes are off the A350 all with really poor predestrian links unless you live on the corner of Cepan park, this is one site not a dozen like Chippenham and Trowbridge.

Where in Trowbridge are there developments off the A350??
The A350 doesn't even go through Trowbridge.

A350 in Chippenham OK, but they were built into the original road scheme, off roundabouts. Totally different.

How close is the ever growing White Horse Business park from the A350? About 300 yards? How far are the Bradley Road superstores from the A350? Yarnbrook and North Bradley are practically a part of Trowbridge now due to expansion.

Whats the ASDA site if its not off a roundabout? Why is it totally different? Bumpers Farm was a Farm when Sims and Countrywide were trading in there prime, your talking of at least 50+ years of trade off those sites and your saying that they are no longer suitable or viable? How? Why? In your view do we need to create a new road system to accomomdate ASDA or just not bother and level the lot? Better than that let it all go derelict? Melksham has a rising population a lot of new homes planned and two average size supermarkets, is this enough? No its not, Personally I travel to Chippenham to do my shopping due to the lack of selection and the bounty Sainsburys charge, and your happy that I take my money to sustain jobs in Chippenham and Trowbridge not to mention the polution? I know an awful lot of people that do the same. Have you seen the plans?

The A350 doesn't go through Trowbridge! Bradley Road and the road out to Yarnbrook is the A363 I think you'll find.

It's in the wrong place, that is the issue. It will need a totally new junction off the A350. It won't go off the roundabout.

That being said, I still think it'll go ahead.
