CARETAKER boss Dave Byrne admits he doesn’t deserve to be handed the Town manager’s job based on recent results - and has pledged his full backing to whoever succeeds Maurice Malpas in the County Ground dug-out.

Byrne has yet to steer Swindon to a League One victory since Malpas’s departure five weeks ago, despite some encouraging displays against some of the division’s top sides.

And with a new manager set to be unveiled any day now, Byrne is determined to go out with a bang against Yeovil - if he is still in charge.

“I would be disappointed not to get the job, but as I have said from day one, it’s all about results,” Byrne admitted.

“If you take the seven games I had in charge last season, and the six from this season - I’ve only lost two in 13, which doesn’t sound too bad.

“But when you put the points tally together it’s horrendous.

“If you were to ask do I deserve the job based on results, the answer would be no. So yes I am disappointed, but we live to fight another day.

“I would like to stay and I think Mr Fitton has said publicly he would like the backroom staff to be kept on.

“If that’s the case I will be delighted and the new manager will get total backing from myself, Ady and the rest of the coaching staff.”

With Town hovering just a point above the relegation places, Byrne believes some fresh faces are needed in the January transfer window.

The former head of youth insists a complete makeover is not necessary however, as he prepares to give his new number one the low-down on the current County Ground squad.

He said: “I believe we have got a good group of players, but what we need is someone to bring them out to play on a consistent basis.

“The table doesn’t lie.

“I will give the new man a complete run down of every individual player, then it’s up to him.

“I believe we need to introduce two or three fresh faces in January. I have some targets in mind and I will let him know, but I’m sure he will have his own targets too.

“Whoever the new manager is, I think he will have done his homework, long before he comes through the door.”

Meanwhile, there has still been no clear indication from the board of directors as to when Town's next manager will be officially unveiled.

Chief executive Nick Watkins stated on Monday that a decision could be made within 48 to 56 hours, although he was unavailable for comment as the Advertiser went to press.

The Advertiser understands the new man could be in place for the visit of Yeovil this weekend, although caretaker boss Dave Byrne is likely to take charge of the team again.
