LEE Peacock remains confident the Swindon Town board of directors will “get it right” in their protracted hunt for a new manager after admitting the players have failed to produce the goods for caretaker boss Dave Byrne.

Peacock, who has been nominated for League One’s PFA Fans’ Player of the Month Award, was hoping Byrne would land the job on a permanent basis, but now accepts it is highly unlikely.

Chief executive Nick Watkins addressed the players before the weekend to update them on the managerial search, and Peacock believes the frustrating wait is necessary for long term stability at the club.

He said: “I have spoken to Nick Watkins and I know the board have the best interests of the club at heart.

“It is frustrating for everyone, but they know we have to get the right man.

“Whoever comes in the players will give him their full support.

“I felt really bad because I wanted Budgie to do a great job for us. I was hoping he would get the job until the end of the season.

“We were only 10 minutes of football away from an extra eight points, which would have put us much further up the table.

“If there is a new manager coming in, I just hope we get that start you always seem to get with a change of manager.

“I think we just need one win to get our confidence back again, then we will kick on.

“The lads have so much potential, but for some reason we are just not doing it collectively.”

Watkins yesterday confirmed there was “nothing new to report” in the search for Maurice Malpas’s successor, with an appointment before the Boxing Day trip to Leyton Orient now unlikely.

With the deal to bring Newcastle United academy director Richard Money seemingly scuppered by a failure to agree compensation, the County Ground board are now exploring alternative avenues.

Former Sheffield Wednesday and Hartlepool boss Danny Wilson, pictured right, is believed to have registered an interest in the post, although this has not been confirmed by the club.

Peacock played under Wilson at Bristol City for four seasons and would welcome a manager with his credentials.

He said: “I can only speak from personal experience, but I have played under Danny before and he is a very good manager.

“He is loyal, committed, and we progressed every season under him.

“He has good man-management skills and I’m sure he would do a good job anywhere.

“But as I have said, I have no preferences. I will support whoever the board bring in and I’m sure they will get it right.”

Meanwhile, Town were yesterday waiting on news of skipper Hasney Aljofree, who hobbled out of Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Yeovil Town with suspected knee ligament damage.

Aljofree was due to see a specialist on Monday afternoon, and will report back to Town physio Dick Mackey today.
