Mixed feelings as charity shop eyes Woolworth's site

A bid to re-open the Trowbridge Woolworth’s store as a British Heart Foundation charity shop has been branded regrettable by councillors.

The BHF wants to use the Fore Street shop, which has been empty since December, as a second-hand furniture and electrical shop.

A spokesman for the charity, which has put in a planning application to change the signage above the store, said: “If planning goes ahead, the new store will provide quality, affordable second-hand furniture and electrical items for the local community.

“All the money raised will help the BHF continue its fight against heart disease, the UK’s single biggest killer.”

But Trowbridge town councillor Graham Payne said: “Our viewpoint is that to use the building is preferable to leaving it empty.

“But it is regrettable that in many ways we have another charity shop opening up.”

Cllr Bob Brice added: “We would rather see a major and prominent retailer, but if we can’t get one then we do need something to fill it up because there are too many empty shops around in the town at the moment.”

You can get almost everything you need in a supermarket. Keen prices, free parking. Every year the supermarkets add another service eg chemist, optician, cafe. Why would anyone go to a town centre? Dirty, can't park, people puffing fags and obstructing the footpath, beggars, muggers, disabled people on scooters trying to mow you down. Town centres are finished. It's only Knees holding it together in Trowbridge and they'd probably do better out of town.
