Cheers as Waitrose plan is approved for Warminster

A Waitrose supermarket looks set to open up in Warminster after a developers’ plans were approved,to the delight of about 50 supporters who clapped and cheered as the decision was made.

Henry Boot Developments was granted permission last night to build a 25,274 sq ft store, which has been earmarked for Waitrose, on the site of the Dents factory in Fairfield Road, but their plan had been in jeopardy when Wiltshire Council planning officers recommended councillors reject the application.

Despite the officers’ concerns, members of Wiltshire Council’s western area planning committee on Wednesday voted through the application, which also includes a cafe, retail units and parking.

The historic glove making company was relying on the application to be approved so it can expand and move to new 30,000sq ft premises in Furnax Lane, which it has already secured planning permission for.

One supporter of the Waitrose bid was Albert Lee, who is retired and lives in The Deverills, near Warminster. He said after the meeting: “It was evident that everyone in the villages supported it. I am extremely pleased.

“It was a no-brainer. It is going to keep Dents in the town and it is going to bring a quality supermarket to Warminster."

Supporters of Henry Boots’ application held a banner at the meeting reading ‘Warminster wants Waitrose’.

During the meeting, Julian Painter from Henry Boot Developments, said: “We have Waitrose’s full approval and we are progressing through the legal niceties as we speak.

“We’ve been working on this scheme for two years and it’s fully deliverable and the funding is in place. We have also secured a site for Dents, which secures their future as one of the largest employees in the town.”

The Waitrose plan will have to be referred to the Secretary of State, but Wiltshire Council can expect a decision to be made within 28 days.

What wonderful news. I'm absolutely delighted.

It's about time Morrison's had some competition.

Is this the start of a new beginning for Warminster? I surely hope so.

What's good about having yet ANOTHER supermarket? Especially one that is, from what I've heard, quite expensive. Of course though, cater for the well of/well-to-do citizens, don't worry about the people struggling to make ends meet. A sign of good things to come for Warminster would be for the lazy b@stards doing the road works to pull their fingers out and finish the job instead of standing around smoking cigarettes and whistling at girls. I see that Station Road has now been opened up again; can someone tell me exactly what has been "improved" here? I don't know if it's just me but the road looks just the same as it did a month ago. When I was in Spain earlier in the year there was road works on a mile long stretch of road at the beginning of the week, by the end of the week they had finished that and moved on. It takes at least a month over here for them to get the digger out of the van. Instead of pandering to developers the Council should be listening to the people of Warminster and what they want. Not what is good for their own ends, i.e. their pockets. Granted, it would be nice to have things like a Cinema/McDonalds etc, as has been the general consensus on these forums; but to say it would boost the local economy is nonsense as lets face it, who goes to the cinema during weekdays when the shops are open? And even when people do go to the cinema, do you then hit the streets on a shopping spree? Not likely. Also, there isn't much of an economy to boost as half the shops in Warminster are empty. And whilst I'm on the subject of shops; Woolworths was closed down some months ago. Does anyone know who is footing the bill for the shop lighting? Everytime I drive past, the lights are on, day and night, yet no one is currently in there. I was under the impression Woolworths closed down because they went bust. I do hope this isn't coming out of my tax...
