Staff at directory firm Dentons in Westbury celebrated the company’s 43rd birthday with a visit from the Government minister for the South West, Jim Knight.
Mr Knight, who is also the minister for Employment and Welfare Reform, was given a tour around the directory offices in Angel Mill, Edward Street, and cut a celebratory cake to officially mark the birthday.
The minister had previously worked as part of the Dentons team from 1991 to 2001 Established in 1967, Dentons provides a local free directory service delivering over half a million directories throughout the south west and has recently launched an online directory.
Robin Denton said: “We have been around a long time and despite a recent recession, we continue to recruit new staff at our Westbury offices, so it’s quite apt that our Minister of Employment visited.
“Dentons is a household name and has been a popular directory due to its size and easy to use format. We now offer an on-line directory for the public who wish to see or use an online version of the paper directory”.
Dentons employs more than 40 people and produces and publishes a paper directory every two weeks, which are delivered by their own staff to all addresses in the respective trading areas.
Earlier on Thursday, Mr Knight, visited Wiltshire Council’s headquarters in Bythesea Road, Trowbridge, where he spent time chatting to a graduate who has recently found work, thanks to a government fund.
Andrew Sprules, 24, is the first young recruit to Wiltshire Council through the Future Jobs Fund.
He had been unemployed since completing his MSc in Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change in October 2008.
His role as mapping assistant at Wiltshire Council involves him working on a project for the VisitWiltshire Tourism Partnership.
His role is to identify a range of existing walks, which can be easily mapped so they can be added to the growing range of walks featured on the VisitWiltshire website.
Mr Knight said: “I’m delighted that Andrew has found employment with the council, it gives him a fantastic opportunity and shows how the Future Jobs Fund is working in the south west.
“As a government we are determined to see young people getting the help and support they need to get into employment.
“To help do this, we have invested £1bn to create local jobs for young people and launched the Backing Young Britain campaign, bringing together employers across the country to give young people the guarantee of work they deserve.”
