Talent show to release DVD in memory of former contestant

The organiser of a talent contest in Trowbridge is releasing a DVD to pay tribute to a former contestant who died at the age of 26.

Jermaine Harvey, who died at his London home just three months after getting married, used to live in Longfield Road, Trowbridge, with his grandmother Iozine Richards.

In 2001, Mr Harvey was the winner of the senior section of the Starry Eyes Talent Show after stunning the crowds with his rendition of Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean, complete with moonwalk.

Sally Boyle, one of the organisers of the event, said: “Jermaine was a lovely a person, as many people have vouched, with a big heart of gold. He did not expect to win that night as he was coaxed into it by his friend Cashelle, who was also taking part in the competition and wanted him there for support.

“Jermaine was such a happy fellow, you could always hear him singing inside and out at rehearsals and he also like to write and recite poetry.

“The night of the final he was back stage at the Civic Hall calming everyone down and massaging their shoulders to help take take their nerves away.

“He did not think for one minute that he would go out there and win it. When the announcement came he was speechless.

“Starry Eyes would like to pay a tribute to Jermaine and to say how honoured we were to have known Jermaine and have had him part of our show.”

She said they had made a DVD of his performance at the show to celebrate his life and to remember what a fun and lovely guy he was.

She also said that the committee had decided that net profits from the sale of the DVD would go towards a bursary set up at Mr Harvey’s former school, King Edward’s School in Bath.

DVDs can be ordered through Christine Scrivens on 01225 752087 or by emailing c.scrivens@hotmail.co.uk for £7.50.
