Melksham came to a standstill as the coffin of PC Daniel Cooper was taken to the town's church accompanied by six police escorts on motorbikes this morning.

The 22-year-old PC died after his patrol car was in collision with a tree in Westwood Road, near Bradford on Avon on February 1 at around 8pm.

His funeral service, which took place at St Michael's Church, was packed with hundreds of mourners including serving police officers in uniform, who flanked the walkway to the building as his coffin was brought in with his father Andrew, mother Heather and 18 year old brother Ollie close behind.

Tributes to PC Cooper, who was based at Trowbridge police station, included one from Chief Constable Brian Moore and his some of his fellow officers.

Songs played during the service included the Braveheart theme tune and music from Top Gun.

The funeral service was followed by a private burial at St Barnabas Church in Beanacre and a reception at Beechfield House for family, friends and colleagues of the PC.
