Plans to build a one-story children’s centre next to Canberra Youth Centre in Melksham have been finalised.

A planning application for the centre in Spa Road have been submitted by Wiltshire Council and the public can comment on the scheme up until April 2.

If permission is granted, the children’s centre would be built, consisting of two meeting rooms, one office, toilets and three storerooms. Building work could be finished by as soon as August.

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “It would support the children’s centre already at Queensway and like all children’s centres, it would provide support for children under five and their parents and carers.”

The plans follow news that proposals to streamline how Wiltshire's Sure Start Children's centres are managed will be decided by Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday.

The county currently has 27 centres with a further three under construction in Pewsey, Chippenham and next to Longmeadow Primary School in Trowbridge.

A children’s centre opened earlier this month in Studley Green, Trowbridge.

The proposal is to group certain centres together in some areas and bring them under one management team.

Any savings will be reinvested into the centres and facilities for young children.
