Town to welcome back flower show after 50 years

The first Bradford on Avon flower show in 50 years will take place this autumn along with the awarding of prizes for the annual Bradford Blooms competition.

Starting at 2.30pm in St Margaret’s Hall, the show on September 11 will feature traditional judging categories such as roses and runner beans, but also novelty contests such as longest carrot and most amusing vegetable.

The show has been organised by the town council at the request of local residents, who are keen to demonstrate their horticultural flair.

Deputy mayor John Potter said: “It’ll be a laugh. We’re aiming for a mix of a traditional and modern flower show with a twist.

“So there will be fierce competition among serious gardeners in the dahlia and chrysanthemums categories, but also plenty of fun categories like the knitted vegetable or, for children, best scarecrow.”

The flower show will be an opportunity for residents to show off their gardening, cooking and craft skills.

Those who don’t have green fingers but love cooking, can try their hand at making a perfect pasty or most beautifully decorated cupcake, among many other cooking categories.

The craft categories include opportunities to make a nesting box or tiara, and there is a photography competition for images of the town on the theme ‘people at work’.

Children can also take part, with a biscuits and cookies competition, making a miniature garden or an animal made from vegetables, or trying to grow the tallest sunflower.

“The whole idea is to show off all the fantastic creativity in the town,” said Mr Potter, chairman of the town council’s leisure, youth and arts committee.

“That doesn’t have to be about painting or sculpture – it can be about ordinary domestic activities like baking a cake or making a nesting box.”

Entry forms are available now at the town council offices or the tourist information centre.
