Anniversary fete opens a new chapter in Trowbridge

The Grove Primary School in Trowbridge celebrated its 40th anniversary in style on Saturday.

One of the highlights was headteacher Alastair Ponsford in the stocks getting very wet from sponges that were hurled at him to raise money for a new school library.

Also joining the celebrations was Wilbur, the Wiltshire Times alligator, who entertained children throughout the afternoon.

The event was organised by the Friends of Grove School (FOGS) who are well on the way to reaching their £8,000 fundraising target for the library.

Andy Baker, chairman of FOGS, said: “It was a brilliant day and we had some past pupils and teachers there who all commented on just how much the school has grown since they were there.

“I think we did really well on the fundraising front because our bar and barbecue both sold out. The band that played were just fantastic too.”

The summer party was opened by Trowbridge mayor Cllr Clive Blackmore and guests were entertained until the early evening with music from Trowbridge-based band Legacy.

The fundraising efforts mean that the school will be able to open its new library as soon as next week, because it has already been able to purchase equipment for the facility.
