The builders have moved into a Trowbridge school planning to unveil a new state-of-the-art space next term.
John of Gaunt School headteacher Andy Packer said he had taken inspiration from the school’s long history in preparation for the new building, which will be an empty space which can be used as a room for art and dance or even as a dining hall.
Mr Packer said: “The new area will be radical and exciting and certainly very unique. It looks a bit like a spaceship because of its circular shape. It will have glass panels from floor to ceiling and a zinc roof so it is going to look quite different.
“Each of our school buildings have their own name and we’ll be looking to the students for ideas for naming this one too.”
The school’s original Wingfield building was first occupied in 1890 and was home to the Trowbridge High School for Boys. Then, on the other side of the current site, the High School for Girls was opened in the 1930s.
The most recent building to have been completed at the school was in 2009 when The Hub was opened as a base for a co-operative between all 22 Trowbridge schools.
Mr Packer added: “When the Trowbridge High School for Girls building opened here in the Thirties it was one of the most impressive school buildings in the country and I’d like to think we can capture that spirit in creating something which we hope will be equally impressive for the modern-day John of Gaunt.”
