It may be a nondescript industrial unit, but behind this bland facade lies Angels, a new swingers’ club based in Melksham.

The members only “alternative lifestyle” club at the Avon Enterprise Park in New Broughton Road launched last Friday in a former warehouse and will be open to singles and couples on Friday and Saturday nights.

It is run by Melksham couple Steve Rumens and Christine Hewer and the club’s website is registered to Beaufort Close in Bowerhill. They refused to comment when approached by the Wiltshire Times this week.

The club’s website boasts that it is “the hottest and most erotic night out in the south west”, adding: “We have four playrooms, a sexy dark tunnel and a large chill out lounge.

“Angels aims to be a relaxed club where you can socialise with open-minded adults. Or more if you wish.”

Neighbouring businesses are concerned. Alan Dean, owner of nearby City Fitness gym at the park, said: “Everyone knows, the whole gym has been talking about it. I’ve had a few people asking if we’re involved, but City Fitness has no involvement with it at all. I don’t have any moral objection to it, just where it is is a bit odd. I doubt it will affect my business.”

Another business owner at the park, who did not want to be named, said: “I don’t care what they do behind closed doors, but it’s what they do behind closed doors near my business. People can say as much as they like that it won’t affect the site, it will. But it doesn’t look like there’s anything we can do about it.”

Lisa Henderson, who runs dance fitness studio Pole-Da-Cise in the same building, said: “If it’s not affecting me then it wouldn’t bother me in the slightest.

“But if my members start to feel uncomfortable because of what’s going on there and it affects my business, then I would have a problem with it.”

One business owner, who also wished to remain anonymous, said: “It’s nothing to do with us. They’re consenting adults at the end of the day, they’re not doing anything illegal.”

The club will open between 9pm-4.30am, and is aimed at over-25s with a bring-your-own alcohol policy. Single women get in free, single men pay £30 and couples pay £20.

Melksham mayor Rod Eaton said: “My initial reaction is that I’m quite surprised. I haven’t been asked but I wouldn’t be too tempted to open it for them.

“I haven’t seen it on any planning lists, but I don’t have an objection to it.”

John Berrelly, joint landlord at the park who runs the Lighting Superstore there, said: “It’s just a private members club as far as we’re concerned. As long as there’s no hassle with it then we’ve got no problem.”

He said if the club affects the trade of others on the site then its tenancy would be reviewed. Acting Sgt Kane Fulbrook Smith, of Melksham Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “I’ve spoken to the owners.

“They’re not breaking any criminal laws and they’re certainly not breaking any licensing laws. Every member of the public has a right to a private life. They are consenting adults and if they want to take part in this sort of activity then they can.”
