Bradford on Avon crowned 5 Live City of 2012

Bradford on Avon will play host to a 5 Live radio show after winning a competition Bradford on Avon will play host to a 5 Live radio show after winning a competition

Bradford on Avon has triumphed in the contest to become the 5 Live City of 2012 this morning.

All week residents and visitors to the town have been voting to make the town an unofficial city for a day and have Tony Livesey present his BBC radio show from the town.

It was announced just before 9am on the 5 Live Breakfast Show that the town beat off competition from the other two shortlisted towns, Whitby and Bungay.

The man who nominated Bradford on Avon for the competition, resident Jonathan Hewat, was told the news live on-air after mayor Peter Leach had put one last public appeal out for votes on 5 Live earlier this morning.

Mr Hewat, of Wine Street, said: "This news is absolutely fantastic, I imagine this accolade will help put Bradford on Avon on the map in a big way, as many, many people listen to 5 Live and they’re sure to take an interest in the town."

Since it was announced on Tuesday that Bradford on Avon was shortlisted, the town council has been campaigning hard to get people to vote by text for it to win, while the tourist information centre has been handing out leaflets asking people to support the town in the contest.

Mr Hewat, resident of the town for 40 years, said: "I nominated Bradford on Avon for the competition as I think it is a very impressive place and offers a lot. I hope this coverage will be of great benefit to the residents and the businesses of the town."

Votes and BoA? Words which do not sit comfortably in the same sentence. Just goes to show how low 5 Live's standards must be.

There was only one round remember.....it was probably rigged. Never mind, it will give the town some publicity that it needs.....I cannot for the life of he see why people rave about the place. A stinking river, an equally stinking canal and too many pubs.....and a traffic congestion problem........Westb
ury is better!

Oh such sad comments with a tinge of sour grapes and on such an exciting day! I think it's truly AWESOME that so many people have got behind a beautiful town with so much to offer - a justly deserved winner! A great way for BoA to start the year and may the good times continue!

BoA WINS!!! What fantastic news for one of the BEST towns in Wiltshire. Well deserved! A great tourist and visitor destination, with lovely old buildings, loads of history, a stunning river and canal. It's not surprising with so much on offer. Well done to everyone!!!

You're dead right jigsaw. Since Swindon became independent, there is ONE city in Wiltshire, and that's Salisbury.
I mean, even Beanacre, that centre of fun and excitement, isn't a city yet.

Stunning river and canal.......is there a specsavers in BoA??

The river is polluted beyond belief, the canal stinks, the towpath is a doggy toilet.....I am struggling to work out what else is on offer......you do have a florescent group of people that seem to police the traffic coming through the town who are a pain in the arrse.

All towns have history, and all towns have old buildings. Most 'cities'have a decent road through them, BoA does not.

Having travelled around the world and a far chunk of this country, being lucky enough to have been brought up in Devon and Cornwall, I can tell you now there are far better tourist attractions west of the City of BoA.....which IMHO is possibly the rough end of Trowbridge!

It seems that some people love to have a moan - even about positive things. Whether you like BOA or not, surely this is a good thing for the county?

I for one love living in Bradford. I'm not from round here originally (and have been all over the world) but it's got everything I need. Lovely countryside, good schools, restaurants and bars, and all within walking distance, no matter where you are in town. There is a good community spirit - there is just about always something going on. I have always felt completely safe and at ease walking around BOA, which cannot be said for some other towns in the county.

To be honest, I'm not sure how much this award will change things - but it can't do any harm!

Well, as a long-time Melksham resident (and proud of it too) I have to say this is an excellent award for B-on-A to win, one that can hopefully only reflect well on the whole of West Wiltshire. Congratulations to everyone who voted, and especially to those who engineered it - a commendable effort all round.

Ignore the trolls, they need their daily fix. They just long for an arguement on the comments section.
Good news for the area and BoA.

There are more listed buildings in Trowbridge than there are in BoA. And, for all its shortcomings, at least Trowbridge is not full of people with a huge chip on their shoulder because they really want to live in Bath but cannot afford the house prices there.

A predictable response, and first I should point out - as the WT website no longer shows our location - that I do not live in Trowbridge but I live just over the county boundary in Somerset; Tellisford to be precise. Now how much do you reckon the average price of a riverside home is here? However we still get the WT delivered here, and what excellent entertainment it provides weekly with stories of BoA antics. I noticed that BoA featured on the local TV news last night, apparently the TV crew had to search all day before they could find a handful of BoA residents who were able to string enough words together to make a sentence for the street interviews. Unsurprising really as most BoA in-breds regard a trip to Trowle, Bradford Leigh or Avoncliff as a foreign holiday. As they prove by their words and actions, as reported in the WT, time and time again. And I don't feel the need to make my post twice to convey my point of view.

I would imagine that the reasons they found it difficult to find locals, is because it was a Tuesday and most people were at work? That didn't require much thinking to figure out.

You seem to have a bit of a chip on your shoulder about BOA fella, it's not healthy! When someone has a different opinion to you, try taking a few deep breaths and counting to ten before you post. Otherwise the comments pages of this website will be filled with utter nonsense like your last post!
