Trowbridge could become the home of a multi-million pound regional sports and leisure campus, if that is what town residents want.

Wiltshire Council is developing campus sites for key towns in the county and has now begun a consultation on the Trowbridge plans.

Corsham’s campus is being built and will incorporate a sports centre, a library and community facilities.

With a new library due to open in September and a £24m revamp of County Hall under way, Trowbridge’s campus is likely to be very different, with services split across the town.

A shadow community operations board has been set up to plan the campus.

Chairman Colin Kay said: “Trowbridge is changing with the new civic centre, the developments with the town hall, the St Stephen’s Place cinema development and the campus plans. If all of these things happen, the transformation would be enormous.

“Out of all of these things, the one people can really influence is the campus.”

Wiltshire Council will have to face one problem before it can build a campus; finding the money.

Mr Kay said: “There is no money set aside in the budget. The council is going to sell Bradford Road and the East Wing and part of the money raised would be used to fund it, but that won’t be enough so they are going to need to find a partner.”

The consultation ends on August 17 and will be seen by the Trowbridge Area Board in September. A campus proposal will go before the public at some point between November and February.

A stand with details will be set up at The Shires shopping centre on July 5, 6 and 7, and at Trowbridge Town Hall on July 12, 13 and 14.
