A thousand petitioners and 400 protestors on the streets of Trowbridge last Saturday have sent a clear message to Wiltshire councillors who denied the town the £46m Bowyers redevelopment that they made the wrong decision.

The issue could now be taken to Parliament after South West Wiltshire MP Dr Andrew Murrison offered to take the petition before the House.

Dr Murrison confirmed he would be happy to personally carry the petition to Parliament, saying: “I am supportive of seeing that site developed as quickly as possible. That seems to be the will of the people of Trowbridge.”

Some people have written to Prime Minister David Cameron appealing for the Government’s planning inspectors to see sense when they review the plans.

The flurry of support for the plans has left protest organiser Rebecca Millard hopeful that she will one day see the former pork pie factory site on Stallard Street transformed into a Cineworld cinema, Morrisons supermarket, six restaurants, a family pub and a riverside walk.

On Thursday the mum-of-two was due to hand in a 1,000-strong petition to the Trowbridge Area Board calling for the Innox Riverside development to go ahead. She said: “We will see this development one day. The people have spoken loud and clear that it is something the town wants and so desperately needs.”
