Trowbridge library closes to make way for new facility

Trowbridge reference library closes at 7pm today in preparation for the move to new facilities in County Hall next month.
 

The lending library will remain open until 5pm on Saturday, but the new library isn’t scheduled to open for another two weeks.
 

Customers can hire books out to read over the closure period, and Trowbridge library cards will be accepted at other Wiltshire libraries until the new building opens.
 

Part of the first phase of Wiltshire Council’s £22 million refurbishment of County Hall, the new library will be opened by leader Jane Scott on September 12.
 

Also part of the refurbishment, a new County Hall reception will open next to the library on the same day. The old reception will close the day before, and the Bradley Road office reception on September 14.
 

The library, designed to be bright and airy, will open into the reception courtyard next to a café, which has been covered over with a bubble roof based on Cornwall’s Eden Project.
 

Planning to cut its 95 existing buildings to just four main hubs, including County Hall, the council hopes to reduce maintenance and energy costs, and save more than £85 million over the next 25 years.
