Warminster benefit fraudster to repay £6,321 after admitting guilt

A Warminster woman pleaded guilty to benefit fraud on September 7 and will have to pay back more than £6,300.

Jane Lewis, 62, of Portway, made a joint claim for income support and council tax benefit with her husband and failed to declare that she had capital in excess of £30,000.

She was sentenced to two years conditional discharge, £85 costs and ordered to pay the full overpayment of £6321.01, at North West Wiltshire Magistrates Court.

The deceit was uncovered following a joint investigation between Wiltshire Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

If people have any information that can help catch a benefit cheat they should call Wiltshire Council’s confidential hotline on 01249 706256 or the National Fraud Hotline on 0800 854440.

Benefit fraud can also be reported on the council’s website www.wiltshire.gov.uk/benefitfraud.
