New youth theatre to start up in Melksham

A Melksham drama teacher is encouraging children to start treading the boards, as she opens her own youth theatre company.

Caroline McCarthy moved to Melksham from Birmingham earlier this year. Having studied drama at university and taught for three-and-a-half years, she decided to set up her own drama group.

The Wiltshire Youth Theatre will meet twice a week at St Andrew’s church hall in Melksham. Classes for children aged between seven and 11 are on Monday evenings between 5 and 7pm, while classes for 11-18-year-olds run on the same time on Thursdays. They are open to all children with any level of experience. Caroline said: “I’m hoping for a very low-key, small community youth group. It’s much more about the children coming and gaining confidence, than taking things too seriously. It’s not a big stage school.”

The theatre will be putting on full scripted performances, including a Christmas pantomime. Classes will be starting soon, at £10 for two hours, with the first class half price.
