School's healthy message
Pupils work out during health week
Pupils work out during health week

PUPILS had fun with bugs, germs, dance, yoga and tai chi during health week at Fitzmaurice Primary School in Bradford on Avon.

The school held the special week to fit social, emotional and physical health into the curriculum.

Children took part in a number of special activities, and teachers incorporated the theme into normal lessons.

Teacher Babs Blake, who co-ordinated the Health Week, said: "The main reason I'm doing it is because I find I can't get social and emotional aspects of learning into the curriculum.

"But if I put it all together in a concentrated week it works well."

Sessions in tai chi and yoga have taught children about relaxation, and the school nurse helped them learn about stress management.

A bacteriologist - known as the germ-man to pupils - gave older pupils a session about bacteria and viruses, while younger children had more basic lessons in hygiene from the nurse.

The week was linked across the curriculum, so the children could learn in different ways.

Miss Blake said: "It's all been very integrated, and they see the additional learning as fun learning."

Each class has done a different healthy food project and all cooked something, from fruit kebabs to health flapjack.

Physical health and fitness have been important, and children had athletics coaching and dance lessons.

Fitzmaurice has strong links with Bath Rugby, and coaches did some tag-rugby sessions.

Pupils have also been doing a dance project for the past six weeks and on Wednesday they performed their own free-style street dances.

"It's been really successful and the children are loving it," said Miss Blake. "They've all had smiles on their faces."
