Police plea on fake notes

POLICE in Corsham are hunting a man and woman in their 20s after reports of forged bank notes being used in the town.

The fake notes were reported to police between March 31 and April 4 after they were used in Somerfield and two of the town's charity shops.

Sergeant Steve McGrath said police were appealing for any information about the two suspects and were also urging people to report any forged bank notes.

He said: "This is a new thing, we haven't had anything like this here for a while.

"Anyone who comes across forged notes should not accept it and should retain it for fingerprints before reporting it to police.

"It tends to be at busier times in shops that the notes are passed off as real.

"People using them target a busy check out where money is exchange quickly so people don't get the opportunity to check the notes.

"It is awful that someone would try and pass something like this off anywhere, but especially in charity shops."

Sgt McGrath said a similar problem had also occurred recently in Marlborough.

He said people can determine whether a note is fake or not relatively easily.

He said the paper forged notes are made on feels different to that of a real bank note.

He also said the writing at the top of authentic notes is slightly raised so people can run their fingers along it to check this.

He explained that checking the watermark by holding it up to the light and checking the quality of the printing were also useful methods.

Police are appealing for information on the two suspects.

The man is described as being in his late 20s, around 5ft 10ins tall, with a slim build and short dark hair.

He was described as wearing a black jacket and blue jeans.

The woman is in her early 20s, is around 5ft 5ins tall and may wear her hair in distinctive pigtails or bunches.

Anyone with any information about forged notes should contact police by calling 0845 408 7000.

My mate printed some nine pound notes and I said no one would be stupid enough to take them but I went into a shop in Westbury and asked if they had change for a nine pound note. The assistant said ' certainly. Would you like three three pound notes or a two and a seven?'
