Wiltshire’s community areas will be showcasing their history, treasures and local produce at the Wiltshire Diamond Jubilee Celebration event on May 1.

All areas will be represented with a tent packed with activities, artefacts and lots more showing what makes each community unique.

Displays will include highlights such as Vikings, Druids, a Jurassic sea monster skull, live music, a special Jubilee sausage and a giant corgi.

The free medieval-themed event will take place at Salisbury’s Cathedral Close from 10am to 5.30pm.

The close will play host to a number of activities with performances from regency dancers to a medieval combat re-enactment.

The event is part of the 2012 a year of celebration in Wiltshire, along with the Wiltshire 2012 Festival of Celebration on July 11 at Salisbury’s Hudson’s Field which marks the Olympic Torch passing through the county.

East Wiltshire community tents will feature: Devizes - A re-enactment of the Battle of Roundway and the only master cooper from Wadworth Brewery will be in this tent. The Regency Dancers and Potterne Mummers will be performing along with a video tour of the town being shown.

Marlborough - This tent will showcase a local Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a World Heritage Site and an important site of special interest. The areas high quality craftsmanship, fine produce and equestrian links will also be displayed.

Pewsey - Wiltshire Honed Sheep, lardy cake samples, an exhibition from Kennet & Avon Canal’s Crofton Beam engine and a special 'Royal' Windmill will all be on show. A timeline and hand-painted map showing local landmarks, photographs and artefacts from the area will also be displayed.

North Wiltshire community tents will feature: Calne - The social history of the Calne community will be the focus in words and voices of the people who have lived and visited, from famous essayist Charles lamb, to people who witnessed the creation of a fulling mill in the Middle Ages.

Chippenham - Historical events that shaped the town will be exhibited, from where the Viking invaders surrendered to King Alfred the Great to the industrial revolution. The historic villages, River Avon and Bybrook valleys will be on display along with the excitement and colour from Chippenham Folk Festival.

Corsham - Learn about historic buildings including Hartham Park and the Corsham Court. Discover the connection The National Trust at Lacock Village has with the photography, TV and film industries. A model of a roman villa excavation by Box Archaeological Society will also be on show.

Royal Wootton Bassett & Cricklade - Interactive storyboards with a medieval slant will be available along with information on the areas royal links e.g Cricklade’s Court Lee, Royal Wootton Bassett’s letters patent and Purton’s British Astronomer Royal, Nevil Maskelyne.

Malmesbury - Historical information from Malmesbury and the surrounding villages will be displayed, along with the changes over the centuries influenced by the transport infrastructure. Starting with the Fosse Way, then the Wilts and Berks Canal before today’s main railway lines and the M4.

Salisbury- Timeline illustrating 26 royal visits to the city dating from 960-2012 with some brought to life with photos, artwork, DVDs, live music, interactive performances and workshops will be showcased. Also help build a contemporary nine-foot giant Queen and cogi.

West Wiltshire community tents will feature: Bradford on Avon- The Millennium Embroidery will be on display, the 12 panels give a snap shot of a century from 1000AD to the present. Jazz Factory musicians, an a-capella singing group and Bathampton Morris Men will perform. Local author Jonathan Falconer will be talking and spinning, weaving and dyeing will be demonstrated.

Melksham - Moles Brewery, Melksham Rock n Roll, Melksham Pearlies and the Town Crier will all be in the tent. A maker of traditional English longbows will be talking about the craft and historic artefacts from the town will be on show.

Trowbridge - The tent will celebrate the town’s long association with the woollen industry with a series of hands-on activities including weaving, spinning, braiding and carding. Cloth from 1943 when Queen Mary visited the town will be on show.

Westbury - A model of the skull of a Jurassic sea monster will be on display, along with a slide show of its excavation. A life size white horse will be at the tent entrance inviting people in to listen to the medieval lute and recorder music. Westbury’s community orchard of Wiltshire apple trees and local beekeeping will also be displayed.

Warminster - Exhibitions include the historic Warminster School with school children in traditional costumes, Longleat House and Safari Park will be showing their historic connections to the Royal Family and maybe one or two fun creatures. Dents the world famous glove makers, including to the Royal family, will also be attending and displaying precious and antique gloves.
