Plans for Iron Duke are on a roll

A project to return a historic machine to Brad-ford on Avon is moving forward, as campaigners submit another planning application next month.

The Museum Society and Preservation Trust are trying to bring The Iron Duke – the machine Stephen Moulton started the rubber works with in Bradford in 1848 – from Bristol to Kingston Road.

The rubber rolling machine was going to be put in Lamb’s Yard until developers and the town council decided to set up a market there instead.

David Moss, chairman of the Preservation Trust, said: “There is less danger of competition on the new site and I don’t see why it should not happen.

“Linden Homes is still being very helpful and we are pushing forward.”

The machine has been in pieces at the Industrial Museum in Bristol since 1973. The campaign to move it will cost £250,000 and in 2010 the late Dr Alex Moulton donated £10,000. Campaigners, however, are wary of raising funds too soon.

Mr Moss said: “It is not sensible to start fundraising until the application is accepted.”
