Added delays and costs for Bradford on Avon hall revamp
4:00pm Sunday 8th September 2013 in Bradford
More delays and costs have been added to the refurbishment of St Margaret’s Hall in Bradford on Avon, after the town council voted to take up the floor to fill in holes which have been discovered in the foundations.
This will cost £77,215 and will add a three-four week delay. Each week of delays costs another £4,000.
Councillors at Tuesday’s meeting also decided to increase the project’s contingency fund by using £100,000 from general reserves, which will be used to pay for the floor.
Cllr Alison Craddock said: “If we do not do it properly now and something comes up, we will be held accountable.”
The concern is that the holes could cause the floor to drop under the weight of the new raked seating, and the structural engineers and the insurers were not willing to carry any risk. Mayor John Potter said: “We are a council, we cannot take risks.”
This is the second setback to the hall’s refurbishment. The roof is being re-pitched at a cost of £78,000, causing a seven-eight week delay to the project, which was originally budgeted at £790,000 and aimed to be finished by December.
