Bradford campaigners celebrate bag charge pledge
2:00pm Saturday 21st September 2013 in Bradford
Green campaigners in Bradford on Avon have welcomed Government plans for a 5p charge on plastic bags from 2015.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg told Liberal Democrats at their autumn conference, in Glasgow, about the plans.
Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon conducted a summer petition, calling for a bag charge, and collected 1,000 signatures.
Group member Rowena Quantrill said: “It was very well supported by residents and tourists.
“We are delighted by the news, although it is a shame we’ll have to wait until 2015 for it.”
The petition, at Piha in Lamb Yard, was handed to town MP Duncan Hames.
He said: “It carries so much more weight, as an MP, to help shape policy when you can demonstrate the strength of feeling from your constituents.”
The charge will apply to supermarkets and large stores.
