A petition to stop the removal of a zebra crossing in Bradford on Avon has reached over 800 signatures.

The Save Our Zebra petition was created last month after concerns that phase one of the town’s Historic Core Zone included the removal the Market Street zebra crossing, to be replaced with five courtesy crossings marked out by stripes.

Godfrey Marks, who set up the petition with fellow resident Kate Nottage, said: “We have a significant sample of public opinion. We found a remarkable few who did not want to sign or disagreed with the petition.”

The HCZ aims to rebalance the relationship between motorists and pedestrians and phase one, developed by Brad-ford on Avon Town Council and Wiltshire Council, focuses on the Market Street/ Church Street junction.

Phase one was subject to a public consultation at the beginning of last year and is due to be introduced in the summer.

It will see the widening of pavements and the removal of yellow lines.
