Building more homes on the edge of Bradford on Avon should wait until the effect of homes planned at Kingston Farm on the Holt Road are known, say councilors.

They have recommended that an outline application by Spitfire Homes Ltd – which would have decided access to a development of homes and land for businesses north of Holt Road and Cemetery Lane – be refused. The meeting of the town council’s planning and town development was on Tuesday.

The plans include up to 60 houses and apartments, up to 3,000 sqm of buildings providing employment, informal and formal public open space, allotments, and landscaping, with drainage, ground leveling and other works.

The land is opposite Kingston Farm, where permission for 138 homes and 77,000 sqft of commercial space was given by Wiltshire Council in February.

Issues about access, safety and traffic were discussed at a meeting before councilors voted unanimously to recommend refusal.

Cllr Alison Craddock said: “I don’t have a problem as such with a development there... If this is going to go ahead, then a lot more thought has to go into how it is going to be accessed.

“Holt Road is not very safe, it narrows down and very often you can’t get two vehicles past.”

Cllr Janet Repton said: “We have a constant stream of cars crossing the bridge already. If we already have a development on one site, this is a development too far.”

Cllr Gwen Allison said: “We are still developing our Neighborhood Plan and at the moment the Core Strategy is not in place.”

Cllr Martin Newman said: “If there is a way of getting a positive benefit for the town out of the scheme, if this could be the vehicle for getting improvements to the road, it ought to be seen as a positive rather than a negative.”
