Holt Youth Club looks set to remain open after it worked hard over the summer holidays to find a solution to Wiltshire Council’s cuts.

The club, which meets in the village hall every Wednesday for two hours, attracts up to 20 youngsters aged from 11 to 19, who meet to take part in discussions, cooking, art, dance, sports and more.

It is run by Broughton Gifford & Holt Youthwork Project, which has been trying to find a solution to the threat of closure after Wiltshire Council announced youth worker redundancies due to £250,000 cuts to its youth services.

The project has been working closely with Community First and Youth Action Wiltshire, which have provided a qualified youth worker, who will work alongside the club’s regular volunteers.

The club will have to find around £7,000 a year to make sure the club stays open.

Alan Fox, chairman of the Youthwork Project, said: “One person has been appointed as a youth worker and we are still looking for another qualified youth worker.

“We are trying to work with the area board, our volunteers and the community youth officer for the area.

“It is not what we had before exactly. We have to reassess what we provide and how we support the qualified youth workers. Our strength is we have the support of the village hall.”

Bradford on Avon Area Board has a budget of £19,200 for youth services and a community youth officer to support the implementation of the new model in its area. There is a one-off additional sum of £23,134 for this year.

Mr Fox said: “We are doing what we can to raise the £7,000 per year.

“We usually get help from the parish council, and the church has also helped us in the past.

“Then we will go to the area board which has about an £18,000 budget, but that it not going to go far at all.

“It will take time. It is not quite what we wanted, but it is about finding a solution.

“We are working towards a more long-term solution.”
