A FORMER lieutenant colonel from Winsley who lost an eye while serving in Korea has thanked a national veterans’ charity for their ongoing support with his sight loss.

Bill MacWilliam, 82, is now appealing to other veterans with sight loss to contact Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for visually impaired ex-service men and women, to find out if they are eligible for support.

Mr MacWilliam trained at the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst in 1949, before joining the 1st Battalion of the King’s Regiment in 1951.

The following year he was posted to Korea war where he was hit by flying shrapnel in the right side of his face, blowing his eardrums and irreparably damaging his eye.

As his sight deteriorated with age, Mr MacWilliam contacted Blind Veterans UK and has since been receiving support from the charity to help him live independently.
