Record numbers turned out to mark Remembrance Sunday in Bradford on Avon with a service followed by wreath laying at the Westbury Gardens war memorial.

The service, at Holy Trinity Church, was full to its 400-people capacity. Afterwards, people made their way to the war memorial and were greeted by the biggest crowd mayor John Potter had ever seen for the occasion.

He said: “There were so many people, I couldn’t put a number on it.”

Councillors, groups and charities were present and all laid wreaths before a five-minute silence, held for longer than usual so noise of traffic did not spoil the solemnity.

Cllr Potter said he felt people who attended were fully aware of the importance of the Great War centenary.

He said: “There was something special about the day and it was a poignant moment. It was coming together that shows how much of a community Brad-ford on Avon is.”

He hopes next year will have an even longer silence.
