Families at Staverton Marina have voiced their anger over proposed parking restrictions outside their homes.

If plans are approved by Wiltshire Council, residents will not be able to park on roads which include Marina Drive, Maunders Drive and Cygnet Way.

The decision for a no waiting at any time restriction comes after Staverton Parish Council received complaints of several near-miss accidents and congestion issues, so approached Councillor Trevor Carbin who carried out a traffic survey in November 2012.

Staverton parish clerk June Jones, said: “Question-naires were circulated to all residences in Staverton and 145 were returned. Of these, the majority were in favour of some form of parking restriction and line markings.

“Staverton Parish Council has a responsibility to act when residents have reported so many near-miss vehicle accidents.

“It is hoped that Wiltshire Council will take on board the comments and concerns of all residents in Staverton when coming to a final decision on parking restrictions.”

Resident Russell Clarke, 32, of Bulrush Place, said: “They say it’s to relieve congestion but there’s still going to be the same amount of cars, there’s just going to be fewer places to park them, so if anything it’s going to be more congested.

“The council are trying to fix a problem that doesn’t exist. As far as we are concerned there has never been a problem around here with congestion or safety.”

Pamela Smith, 67, has been renting a flat in Blake Court for seven months and only chose the location because of the parking. She said: “I was gobsmacked and annoyed. I just can’t see any problems with the parking.”

Cllr Trevor Carbin said: “The consultation is still under way and what’s important now is for everyone to get their response in to Wiltshire Council by the November 17 deadline.

“Where opinion is overwhelmingly against any particular yellow line it should then be possible to reduce or remove it from the final set of restrictions.”
