The Lions Club have announced that they will be decorating Bradford on Avon’s Christmas tree next year after several complaints were made over decorations put up last month.

Decorations first put up on the tree in Westbury Gardens by Pavilion cafe owner Andrew Allen, at the request of mayor John Potter, were criticised as ‘gaudy’.

The furore even reached the national press until Mr Potter stepped in to tone the tree down.

The Lions have said that, despite the backlash, it was good publicity for the town and they hope to make next year’s tree more traditional.

They have previously decorated the tree but this year members were only in charge of putting it up.

A spokesman from the club said: “To be honest, we feel sorry for the gentleman who decorated the tree because of the comments made.

“The lights team did a wonderful job in the park and on the bridge which looks stunning and next year we will decorate the tree with tinsel and lights.”
