Students at St Laurence School have made the Top Ten in a national design competition by creating the Socket Pocket to solve an everyday problem for mobile phone users.

Bradford on Avon Year 10s Charlie Binney, 14, Isabelle Hart, 15, Jonathan Parrish, 15 and Maxwell Ralph, 14, entered the Design Ventura competition with a gadget that holds a mobile phones while charging it at a power socket. Their invention fitted in with the theme of “connect.”

Isabelle said: “We thought of convenience and everyday problems, like charging your phone. Sometimes the phone lead will break from being too far away, so this solves that.

“I think we’re all excited but nervous about the pitch, but we just need to get prepared. We’re developing prototypes and making sure we are confident on our presentation because people buy into people and we hope they buy into our idea and us.”

They will pitch their idea to judges on Monday. Winners will have their product sold in the Design Museum Shop in London.

Other shortlisted ideas include ScoffStix, a no-challenge chopstick with an integrated fork and Enviro-Card, a modern postcard using seed paper with wildflower seeds to plant.
