A group of mums who campaigned for a 20mph speed restriction in Bradford on Avon have said they are disappointed at Wiltshire Council’s 20mph task group’s decision not to implement a countywide restriction.

In the past year, the group 20splentyboa has gained support from the town council for 20mph limit in the town.

However, in a report published by Wiltshire Council this week, the 20mph task group decided against the scheme.

It concluded that “while area wide 20mph limits in Wiltshire should not be completely ruled out, the use of blanket 20 mph limits should only be considered where there is robust supporting evidence as to their likely success”.

Campaigner Tamsin Daddow said: “The main problem in Bradford on Avon is that people use their cars more than they should do and that is because people do not feel safe walking or cycling.”

“We have quite a few elderly sheltered housing schemes and the residents won’t come out because they are worried about the cars and the roads. If you reduce the traffic people will feel safe and want to walk to school or work.”

Former England rugby star Lewis Moody lives in Bradford and has backed the 20splenty campaign. He said: “With young children that regularly walk around our town, it is imperative that a 20mph speed limit is enforced. It should not have to take a major accident for something to happen. Prevention is the best way forward to making our streets safer.”

The report, which will be discussed at the environment select committee on Tuesday, also suggests reviewing the policy again in 2017.
