Members of Bradford on Avon’s rugby club will appear on BBC TV show Eggheads, after they filmed their episode at BBC Scotland in Glasgow last Friday.

The six men first came up with the idea at their weekly touch rugby club in October. Two also play for Bradford’s second team.

To stand out in their application, the group submitted a video audition where they incorporated their rugby skills to answer questions about a range of topics including politics, science, sport, music and TV.

John Richards, a member of the team said: “We filmed our audition video in the rugby club changing rooms and decided to pass the rugby ball around for each turn, which I think the producers liked because an application form and a video audition later we were told we got in.”

The team named itself A Touch Too Much to show how they met and how they aimed to compete against the Eggheads team. Mr Richards said: “We thought that we could be too much for the Eggheads and beat them.”

Also on the team were John Baker, Frazer Morgan, Andy Warren, Paul Goddard and Geoff Day, who all live in and around Wiltshire.

The quiz show, presented by Jeremy Vine, is broadcasted on BBC Two and sees hopeful contestants compete against the highly-competitive group of Eggheads in specialised subject rounds as well as general knowledge questions to win a cash prize.

After many sessions of practising, the group soon came to realise that each person specialised in one of the many given subjects.

Mr Richards added: “A few of us got apps on our phones to quiz each other and we realised that we had a technology person who actually put together a spreadsheet that listed all the Eggheads and what subjects they were or were not good at.”

The group cannot reveal how they got on in the competition, but said they are looking forward to watching it when it is on screen.

Mr Richards said: “Most of us were really excited and some, who I thought would be cool, were quite nervous.

“When we found out that we had been chosen, we told producers that we wanted them to choose who wouldn’t make it (only five play from the six-man squad) and to not tell us until we got there.”
