Bradford on Avon’s Historic Core Zone project will not now go ahead following the result of last night’s town poll, Wiltshire Councillor John Thomson confirmed today.

The cabinet member for highways said: “This was all about asking the people of Bradford on Avon what they wanted. We would only want to make changes if this local scheme had the support of the majority of people in the town.”

Almost 3,000 town residents visited one of seven polling stations yesterday evening to vote on whether the scheme should be implemented. Residents voted 1,315 in favour of the scheme and 1,669 against.

The project would have involved adapting roads in the town to include some wider pavements, the removal of zebra crossings and their replacement with courtesy crossing points and additional safety bollards.

The aim was to create a clearly identifiable zone in the centre of the town, warning drivers about the presence of pedestrians.

The design and funding of £500,000 was in place for phase one of the scheme, which would have covered Market Street and Church Street. Later phases, which had not yet been funded, would have covered Silver Street and St Margaret’s Street.
