WINGFIELD is now home to its own footpath after several concerns were raised about the safety of pedestrians in the village.

The parish council began planning the project in 2012 after villagers complained about having to walk on a grass verge on the stretch of the A366 from Trowle Farm to Loves Lane.

After facing several setbacks regarding funding, the parish council celebrated the work being completed this week to the delight of residents with the scheme being match funded by Wiltshire Council.

Helen Bennion, 47 of Loves Lane, said she is delighted with the new addition as it makes walking her dog a lot easier.

She said: “It is a great asset to the village and it allows people to walk along the stretch of road without having to look over your own shoulder to see if there is any traffic coming towards you.”

The project cost a total of £8,000 and gained the support of MP Andrew Murrison.

Maggie Novotni, a Wingfield parish councillor, who has led the project said: “The footpath is just wonderful because we can make journeys to the church, the pub and the school more safely now. Before, we would have to walk on the road so the new additional is brilliant for everyone.

“Balfour Beatty have done a wonderful job. What I have found from doing the project for two years is the amount of friendships I have struck up with people who I didn’t speak to before and it has been a real community effort.”
