BRADFORD on Avon pupils went into the Guinness Book of World Records on Wednesday after helping create the world’s biggest paper bag and fitting the most people in it.
Fitzmaurice School youngsters joined one of the UK’s largest promotional bag companies, Paper Bag Co, to smash the old record with measurements of 22.5m long, 15.41m wide and 3.36m deep.
This was 3.95m longer than the previous record, 4.08m wider and 42cm deeper than the previous holders at the Faculty of Technology and Engineering in an Indian University last year.
Fitzmaurice headteacher Tracey Dunn said: “Being involved in a world record on the school grounds will have forged some lifelong memories for the children.”
The team, led by Jon Marling, director of Paper Bag Co and the world record attempt itself, used 1,400m of brown paper, three miles of tape and 1,500m of string.
“We are really happy to hold a world record. We are proud to have accomplished this amazing record for Great Britain,” said Mr Marling.
The firm also set a brand new world record for the most people in a bag, with 272 people.
Tom Vaughton, MD of the company helping to organise the record attempt, Varn Media, said: “The kids were ecstatic. Not a bad day’s work to break two world records.”
